Gear Train Design

Summary

My team was tasked with designing a three-shaft, two-step gear-train system in a housing separated at the plane of shaft center-lines. All the bearings, shafts, gears, and materials need to be designed or selected to fulfill the requirement of having a gear train reduction ratio of 7.

Process

First, we did an analysis of forces and moments to determine appropriate dimensions for the shaft, bearings and gears:

Then, we did extensive calculations to make bearing selections and shaft materials:

Result

We designed a fully functional gear train with bearing and gear designations. CAD models were generated and assembled for visual clarity and convenience.
